When Lady Gaga announced she had fibromyalgia in 2017, it helped raise awareness of what is often a much misunderstood condition. “Often patients with fibromyalgia go from doctor to doctor looking for answers,” Dr. Elizabeth Volkmann. Fatigue is a common sign of fibromyalgia—Lady Gaga was even forced to postpone her 2017 tour because her symptoms were so intense. “Fibromyalgia is a diagnosis of exclusion, which means it is only diagnosed after you undergo a thorough physical exam, medical history, and tests to rule out other possible conditions,” According to Yale Medicine Experts, “During the physical exam, your doctor may look for patterns of soft spots throughout your body. These soft spots, along with other common symptoms including fatigue, poor quality sleep and brain fog, can point the doctor in what direction Fibromyalgia Diagnosis.”

Persistent, chronic pain is a major symptom of fibromyalgia. “Anyone can feel a slight prick, but a person with fibromyalgia can feel it aggravated,” volkman says, “We look for pain in specific parts of the body: discrete areas, not like soft tissue inflammation over a joint. We usually point to areas of muscle: 18 points throughout the body.”

Fibromyalgia sufferers often describe having symptoms of headache, stiffness, and chills. “The cause of fibromyalgia is unknown,” Pain Management Specialist Robert Bolsh, MD says, “Genetics, trauma or infection may play a role. Fibromyalgia sufferers say it seems like they have the flu all the time.”

Experts say that anxiety and depression are closely related to fibromyalgia. “Fibromyalgia can create a vicious cycle of symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and disturbed sleep,” says
Rheumatologist Carmen Gotta, MD. “The brain then gets wired into stress mode and this triggers tenderness, pain, fatigue and cognitive difficulties that further increase stress and anxiety.”

Doctors say that chronic sleep and memory problems can be a sign of fibromyalgia. “People with fibromyalgia experience muscle pain and tenderness throughout their body, along with other symptoms including extreme fatigue, mood disturbances (such as anxiety and depression), headaches, and problems with sleep and memory,” Hope Ricciotti, MD, and Hi-Chun Hur, MD, MPH, “While doctors don’t know what causes fibromyalgia, it sometimes runs in families, which may indicate an underlying genetic predisposition to the disease.”
